The 2010 Grinder Pinotage

The 2010 Grinder Pinotage
South Africa, $15

To be honest, this wine doesn’t pair particularly well with yellow tomato sauce (this week’s recipe pick). However, it’s brand new in Canada and represents a new category that’s been taking the bistros of Europe by storm for the last little while, so I figured let’s sneak ahead of the curve. The style is called Coffee Pinotage and, like Peter Parker becoming Spiderman, came about as result of some funny business in the lab/wine room (but with yeast and oak in the place of radioactive spiders). The result is interesting because it gives the problematic Pinotage grape a serious mocha aroma on the nose with fruity, full body in the mouth. Plus it’s got a cool label and is under $15.
